Bollywood actor Mukul Dev, known for ‘Son Of Sardaar’ and ‘Jai Ho’, passes away at 54

Actor Mukul Dev passed away at the age of 54 on the night of Friday, May 23, 2025, in Delhi. He had reportedly been unwell for a few days before his death. An official statement confirming the exact cause of his death is still awaited. Dev's friends reached his residence on Saturday morning after hearing the news of his passing.

Actress Deepshikha Nagpal confirmed Mukul Dev’s death on social media. She shared a picture of the late actor on her Instagram Story with a short message that read, “RIP” and added, “I can’t believe this Muks.” Family members and close associates are yet to release a detailed statement regarding the death.

Born in New Delhi, Mukul Dev was the son of Hari Dev, a former Assistant Commissioner of Police. His father introduced him to Afghan culture and was fluent in Pashto and Persian. Mukul completed his training as a commercial pilot from the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi before entering the film industry.

Mukul Dev made his acting debut with Mahesh Bhatt’s Dastak in 1996, appearing alongside Sushmita Sen and Sharad Kapoor. He went on to work in Hindi films such as Jai Ho, Son of Sardaar, Yamla Pagla Deewana, R... Rajkumar, and Bhaag Johnny. He was also seen in regional cinema including Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu films. His television appearances and contributions to serials also marked a part of his three-decade-long career.

Apart from acting, Mukul Dev was also involved in writing. He wrote the story for Hansal Mehta’s film Omerta in 2008 and handed it over to the director in the following years. Dev once said, “I wrote Omerta in 2008 and gave the script to Hansal sometime in 2010 or 2011.” He added that Hansal Mehta developed it further into a full screenplay with dialogues. Dev also mentioned that he used basic camera visuals to experiment with the story before it was made into a feature film.
